Ethics... to be continued

1.] In 2000, officials at the Univesity of Wisconsin at Madison digitally inserted a black student's face into a photo of white cheering football fans for the cover of the new application brochure. Their intention was to advertise the university's diverse student body, but most found the manipulation offensive. The younger brother of a reporter for the school newspaper noticed the difference; he pointed out that the black students whose face was used, Diallo Shabazz, had a glare while the others did not. Officials at the school have apologized for this "error in judgement" and are reprinting some 50,000 brochures with a different cover picture.

Mulitmedia Perspective [Sugar Hill]

A. What skills in addition to photography did Melanie Burford utilize to produce this slideshow?

----> She must have grown very close to this family because they allowed her into the most personal situations, including Gloria's wake, to take pictures and capture their pain. She must have utilized her personal relation skills, including compassion and empathy.

B. What was the effect (added power or meaning) of the multimedia effects of the slideshow.

----> The gospel singing by Miss West played in the background added alot of power to this slide show. It adds culture and makes the viewing more intense.

The most interesting effect?

---->The Pastor Rock videos, I think, is the most intriguing effect on the website. This man's a pastor who runs Living Hope, a church near Sugar Hill. In his videos he retells his experiences in Sugar Hill and the viewer get more of an idea about what life is like there.

Academic Shoot

A good friend of mine is a teacher at the Children's Center of Austin. I chose this academic environment for my shoot, because I knew photographing kids would be fun and make good photos.

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get close, capture real moments, and capture action or emotion? How did you deal with these?

-----> Since all of my subjects were kids ages 3-5, they were all very excited about getting their pictures taken. Getting candid shots was especially difficult because they'd always want to look at the camera and "Say Cheese". To deal with this, I had my friend make some kind of distraction and get their attention while I snapped a shot. Capturing emotion and action was not difficult at all; these kids were so full of energy, every facial expression was emotional.

2. What technical aspects of photography (focus, exposure, composition) did you find yourself thinking about the most, and how did you make sure you did these correctly?

-----> I was pretty worried about the lighting and was constantly testing and checking my light meter to make sure it was above 60. Focus was another small problem, I tried using manual as much as possible, but resorted to automatic for certain shots. Composition came pretty easily; the kids were always fooling with something in their hands and there is so much going on in classrooms like that so filling the frame was not difficult.

3. Describe how you attempted to use at least one of the advanced composition techniques when you shot.

-----> I tried using the rule of thirds pretty often. I'd try to get one kid in focus off-centered, then I'd include another child or some toys in the center background.

Sports

Photographer: Bob Rosato
Focal length of lens -
Canon EOS-1D Mark II N, EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM
Shutter Speed -
1/400 seconds
What is the effect of shooting at this shutter speed?
Since the subject seems to be at rest, the shutter speed allows this moment to be captured in focus and from a great distance away.
Aperture-
2.8 seconds
What is the effect (Depth of field) of shooting at this aperture?
The subject takes up the entire frame, so this aperture allows for his whole face to be in perfect focus, while the background is out of focus.
Position -
The photographer was most likely standing on the sidelines opposite the field to get this shot because he used an extremely long lens and this player does not look like he is in the game at that time and you can see the jersey of another resting player.

Lines

In this photo, the slant of the destruction of the Pentagon leads the viewers' eye to the silhouettes of the two men in the foreground.

Rule of Thirds

The biggest structure in this photo is set off to the right of the frame, making this a good example of the rule of thirds.

Framing

The window frames in the picture cut the frame into sixths. With the firemen in the middle of one of the window frames, this is a good example of framing.

Avoiding Mergers

In this photo, all mergers are avoided because the helicopter is just hovering in the sky and doesn't interfere with anything else in the frame.

Simplicity

The fact that this firemen's face is the only thing in the frame makes this picture very simple; however, it is still extremely powerful because we can infer his emotions in the situation from his facial expression.

Balance

This photo is balanced in that the two subjects, the two horses, are facing opposite directions; this creates symmetry and balance in the frame.

After Printing Post

After getting our negatives from the tank, we used the squeege to get the excess water off of them, then hung them up by paperclips on a rack. After they were fully dry, and we were ready to print the image we had chosen, we went into the darkroom. We loaded the negatives into the tray that goes into the enlarger... TO BE CONTINUED.

negative critque

There were no major problems with my negatives other than a few water spots; this is easily fixed by rewashing and wiping off the water a little more thoroughly.

The negatives I'm choosing to print are #s 13 and 15. Negative no. 13 is cool to me because you can't see any faces, just bodies and entertwined hands. There are a pair of hands being held that's right in the middle of the photo, so it makes an awesome looking subject. Negative no. 15 is a good choice because you can see everyone working together to get the girl over the other arms. The expressions on the faces are cool because they're a mixture between confusion and frustration. Because it was taken vertically, more people were fit into the frame and you can see that they're all crouched down. Cool lookin' picture.

Academics

"the story"

This tells a story to me because of the girl with her head in her hand, writing her assignment, with people behind her in blurred action. The story is she is overwhelmed by school because everything is "whizzing by her." That's just what I got from it.

"action and emotion"

This picture shows the most action because... there's a huge ball of fire. The look on the guys face who's holding the lighter is one of awe.

"filling the frame"

This picture fills the frame the best because the trumpet players face fills up the background, and her fingers and the trumpet valves fill up the foreground. There's not a spot in the picture that doesn't have to do with the subject : the trumpet and its player.

Contest Pictures

This picture won first place in "Beg Color Landscape" in the 2002 Fall Contest. It is inspirational to me because I like the way the fog is covering the end of the staircase so it creates a sense of infinite space. Also, the way the trees clear to show the staircase is really cool.

Pinhole Review

There is no person or action in this picture; there is also no blur because its a still life of some very cool looking architecture. Everything in this picture is in focus and nothing is warped.

There is no person or action in this photo either but I really don't like this one as much because the subject/architecture is not as appealing to the eye. Everything is pretty much in focus but there is some warping and fading in the upper left corner.

critique two photos

This picture follows only one composition rule. The subject does not
take up the full frame, and the shot was not taken at a time of action or emotional height. However, this is a candid shot because she's not posing or looking towards the camera.

This picture does follow many if not all of the composition rules; the subject take up the entire frame and this is a candid shot as the subject is not looking at the camera. Lastly, there seems to be some action in this shot beacuse we see that she is using her hands while she's speaking.
